The Super Cup touring season opened its season last night at Dominion with twin 60 lap features and two different winners.
Bob Schacht was the fastest in qualifying but would start the first feature from inside row two after the redraw. However, it only took him eight laps to get to the front where he would virtually be unchallenged for his first checkered flag of the season. Coming in second was Ben Ebeling and third was J.J. Pack. The first feature was almost caution free with only one yellow flag.
The second feature looked very much like the first with Schacht assuming the lead 10 laps in this time and looked to be driving away, but Ebeling had a different idea. Once Schacht got out front, Ebeling stayed right with him in his wheel tracks for most of the race and completed a late race pass to take the lead and drive on to his first checkered flag of the season. Schacht finished second and Pack finished third for the second straight race.
The Alcova Mortgage Modified also had twin races Saturday night and they had two different winners as well. Mike Rudy, who qualified second fastest but started fifth after the redraw, picked his way to the lead after only eight laps. Jimmy and Chris Humblet were tracking him down and trying to reel him in for most of the race, but Rudy was able to eventually drive away and take the win, his first of the year. J. Humblet came home second, C. Humblet third and Kayla Surles rounded out the top four.
The second feature saw the Mike Carte on the pole following the eight-car mandatory invert. Rudy, having started eighth, was working his way back through the field but spun early on in turn one sending him back to the rear of the field. He would be able to fight back and finish fourth. C. Humblet took the checkered putting him in a familiar place at Dominion, victory lane. Adam Medek and J. Humblet rounded out the top three.
Truckin Thunder Virginia Racer LMSC at Dominion Raceway
The largest field was made up of the Truckin Thunder Virginia Racer Late Model class with 19 cars. Ryan Matthews picked up the pole in qualifying but would start fifth after the redraw. Mike Ganoe looked like the car to beat as he was in the lead until with 15 laps to go, Cameron Burke gave him a little tap heading into turn one causing Ganoe to go up the track a little and Burke drove by him for the lead. Burke stayed there until Ryan Matthews completed a late race pass to take home his second win in a row on the young season. Rounding out the top three were Eddie Slagle and Burke.
Other classes in action Saturday night saw Keith Riley win the Alcova Mortgage Mini Stock feature with Daniel Bentley and EJ Kenny rounding out the top three. In the Absolutely Amish Structures Any Car division, C.J. Terczak won for the third straight race in the four-cylinder class and Cam Hensley took the checkered for the eight cylinder class, also his third in a row.
Saturday May 8th will have twin 60 lap features for the Geico of Fredericksburg late models, twin 20 lap features for the Alcova Mortgage Dominion Stocks and 25 laps for the Alcova Mortgage UCARS. Gates open at 5 and the green flag drops at 7 pm.
