On October 5, Dominion Raceway saw 13 races at the High-Banked Ring of Fire. Three
Legends drivers swept Twin 20’s in three Inex Legends divisions, while 5 new 2024 Track
Champions were named.
Ashton Williams, Chase Burgeson, and Joshua Hicks kicked off and concluded the day of racing
with sweeps in their Legends divisions. Due to a huge turn out of cars in the Legends field, the
Young Lions and Semi Pros were divided into separate races and the Pros and Masters ran
together for a total of three races. Williams won for the Young Lions, Burgeson won for the Semi Pros, and Hicks won the Pro/Master’s race.
Hicks’ victory in the third race was the closest finish of the night ending in a photo finish and a
margin of victory of 0.008 over Jake Bollman.
After the Legends, the stage was set for an exciting finale for the VA Modifieds. Allen Marshall
entered the night with a six point lead over Kayla Surles for the championship; Defending VA
Modified champion, Shannon Marano, sat 10 points back. Surles, the defending Modified
champion, was racing for the first time since suffering a leg injury in a VA Racer race earlier in
the summer. In Surles’ absence, Marshall emerged as the front runner for the division.
Marshall’s #99 modified started on the pole and the mission was simple: finish the race and stay ahead of Surles. Josh Fowler had no intention of making this easy on Marshall, and early in the race, the two cars made significant contact jostling for the lead. Fowler fell back and Marshall returned to the top spot. Perhaps it was the championship pressure that caused the two cars to collide, but Marshall then had to hold off the hard-charging Shannon Marano.
With 13 laps to-go, Surles passed Marano for second after the #6 could not get by Marshall.
Surles closed the gap to the #99, and going for the lead, the two collided and washed up the
track. Marano and JD Eversole would pass for first and second. Marshall maintained third place, but Surles dropped back, before eventually getting into an additional skirmish with Tommy Jackson.
This caution with 8 to-go saw Marano, Eversole, Fowler, Marshall running in the top four spots.
One lap into the restart, Marshall’s race would take a devastating turn, as earlier contact came
back to get him: a flat tire meant his new goal was to just finish the race.
Marshall managed to limp around the final 7 laps on a rim, while Marano would see the
checkered flag. After finishing a lap down and a 7th place finish, Marshall’s championship hopes
were dashed. Surles, who salvaged a 4th place finish, ended in a tie with Marshall, and also
saw their championship hopes evaporate.
Overcoming large odds, Marano not only took home the race win, but made up 12 points on the
leaders to swoop in and steal the 2024 championship.
“The Rooster pulled the spurs out tonight,” said Marano in Bugsy’s Auto Repair Victory Lane.
“That was tough. I can’t believe it.”
In a 50 lap Ucar feature, Michael Frayser wrecked on lap 7 to finish 10th, but his consistent
season was enough to claim the title. In 16 races this year, Frayser won 5 times and finished in
the top-5 fifteen times. Trevor Stinson got his fourth win of the year in the event.
Chase Johnson finished 2nd to JD Eversole in a 118 lap feature to wrap up the Truckin Thunder
VA Racer season. The P2 finish was enough for the 16-year old to win his first DR Track
Championship. In 15 races, Johnson won 4 times and had 13 top-5 finishes. (Johnson would be credited for the win after Eversole would fail dyno testing.
“I knew we would have a shot at it [this season], but I’m just so happy we won,” said Johnson. “I
started racing go-karts at 8-years old, and here I am 8 years later.”
John Andrews finished second to Richard Storm in the 4/6 Cylinder Any Cars race; however, it
was enough for the Remington Auto Parts #K9 car to hold off Mike Chapman for the
championship. It was Andrews third straight title in the division. He had 4 wins in 6 features.
“It was another short track night, and I love short track racing,” said Andrews.
Keith Riley got his fourth win of the season in the Mini Stocks to wrap up his championship
season.
